How I Empower College Students as a College Success Coach

Updated: Sep 26

Welcome to Rudder Coaching's Blog!

I am excited to share more about how I help college students reach their college goals and make the most of their time and tuition!

My Mission

I aim to empower students to thrive, not just survive their college years. College is an amazing opportunity that can launch a young adult into their professional life and the real world with confidence, ready to contribute! Through 1:1 coaching, we figure out the roadblocks to reaching college success, work to remove them, and then build the skills to accelerate progress!

About Me

For so many reasons that are unique to each student, I have seen how college success can get derailed, and it’s hard to get back on track. As a former college counselor, I had many students reach back out after high school confused that the transition to college had not gone as expected, despite being successful in high school. Students and parents felt frustrated, overwhelmed, and stuck. I remember back to my own college days feeling a bit rudderless because I didn’t have a clear professional direction, and I was worried I had no passion! I was also a big procrastinator. I realized that many college students lacked the same skills they needed to be fully engaged in college. Having studied time management, career design, and life coaching, and putting these skills to work in my own life, I decided 1:1 coaching was the way to help a college student figure out their own roadblocks, and guide them toward strategies to get back on track.

My Approach as a College Success Coach

When I meet a college student, we assess which of the three areas they need to focus on first: Direction, Belief, or Action.

Direction: Clarifying 2-3 exciting career paths with academic pathways to get the student there. Through the Career Design Process I’ve developed, using the Sparketype Assessment, the student can feel energized by their unique value.

Belief: Building self-confidence is a skill that we work on together with so many opportunities to practice in college and it is the foundation for the pathways forward. Action: Time management has to support small action steps to make a student’s goals become reality. When these three ingredients come together, the result is a meaningful college experience fueling the next chapter after graduation.

Then we get to work.

As parents of twins (boy and girl), we have seen the growth and confidence build in our children as a direct result of a college education! The only downside was the lack of guidance and career support leading to graduation. After the highs of graduating, more input pertaining to internship and career paths should’ve been readily available to the students!
